First Thursday’s at CHS Gallery – Blue Sky Gallery – Performance by Vicky Saye Henderson & THE Dubber
Blue Sky was born Warren Edward Johnson in Columbia, South Carolina, on September 18, 1938. He attended Dreher High School before his acceptance at the University of South Carolina, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art and education.
At the prestigous Springs Mills show, he was judged “best of show” by Henry Geldzahler, then curator of the Metropolitan Museum, whereupon Sky was invited to move to New York to study at the Art Students League.
Sky has been painting professionally for over 45 years, and has been solely supported by his art since 1970. In 1974, he legally changed his name to Blue Sky, and engraved it across his most famous work, Tunnelvision, a year later.
Tunnelvision was featured in the February 1976 issue of People Magazine, and it has appeared in dozens of publications since. Sky has exhibited alongside such artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Andrew Wyeth, Isamu Noguchi, Louise Nevelson, George Tooker, and Winslow Homer.
In 2000, Sky received the “Order of the Palmetto” – South Carolina’s highest civilian state honor.
Vicky Saye Henderson
I am a working actor and teaching artist. I find great purpose and passion in what I do, and I enjoy finding new ways to make my art form more enterprising and relevant within my community. My performance projects include live stage, film, TV, commercials, voice-overs and vocalist work. As a teaching artist, I am approved by the SC Arts Commission and listed on their teaching artist roster, offering arts residencies to schools K-12 and colleges. A strong believer in career cross-pollination, I design and facilitate professional development opportunities for businesses, organizations, churches and individuals using the “up-on-you-feet,” versatile, perspective-shifting and solution-oriented mediums of improvisation and theatre arts. I oversee a variety of actor training programs for several theaters in the Midlands of SC. I am in my 11th season as a company member and instructor at Trustus Theatre, the professional theatre house in Columbia, SC. I look for performance projects that afford me opportunities to work with highly creative, collaborative and knowledgeable artisans who are focused on crafting works with extraordinarily high production values and societal relevance. I relish my role as an educator of other actors, equipping them with the tools needed to be effective in achieving their career goals.
THE Dubber is a Washington,D.C., musician with roots in funk and hip-hop from his years in Los Angeles. His more recent work is anchored in the worldview and sounds of reggae, taking the socio-political side of Bob Marley..The Original Rockstar, baby.
In the tradition of the Mississippi Delta Bluesmen, THE Dubber confronts the world with only his words and a guitar. The self- taught singer/songwriter reinvents himself by infusing the styles of a 30 year musical journey. America’s Rock, Jazz and Funk, flavored by the International sounds of Reggae, Middle Eastern and Afro Beat, is the complex stew that helps him express his blues and completes such a distinctive sound.
Since 2005, the Washington DC born/Columbia SC based artist has been trailblazing the U.S. with an honest and intimate stage show. His sophisticated one man band guitar style and universal message of Oneness, keeps THE Dubber booked year round. Always a crowd favorite, he has played prestigious events such as South by Southwest Music Conference (Austin TX) and Mid-Atlantic Music Conference (Charlotte NC).
With radio airplay here and abroad, three U.S. tours and two albums “In the Temple of…” 2005, “Global Warning” 2010 under his belt. THE Dubber recently embarked on his first European tour in the fall of 2011, which went over with rave reviews throughout London and Paris.
